The Journal of Curious Letters
Part #1 of "The 13th Reality" series by James Dashner
Young Adult
What if every time you made a choice that had a significant consequence, a new, alternate reality was created--the life that would've been had you made the other choice? What if those new realities were in danger? What if it fell to you to save all the realities? Atticus Higginbottom, a.k.a. Tick, is an average thirteen-year-old boy until the day a strange letter arrives in his mailbox. Postmarked from Alaska and cryptically signed with the initials "M.G.," the letter informs Tick that dangerous--perhaps even deadly--events have been set in motion that could result in the destruction of reality itself. M.G. promises to send Tick twelve riddles that will reveal on a certain day, at a certain time, at a certain place, something extraordinary will happen. Will Tick have the courage to follow the twelve clues M.G. sends to him? Will he be able to solve the riddles in time? Will Tick discover the life he was meant to live? The first volume of an outstanding new children's fantasy series, The Journal of Curious Letters is filled with adventure, humor, riddles, and, oh, yes--danger... As M.G. warns Tick, Very frightening things are coming your way. Will you join Tick and his friends on an amazing journey through the Realities? What will your choice be?

1750. A young Buddhist priest traveling to Korea is caught in storms, driven across the Pacific and shipwrecked. Lacking survival skills, he is taken in by the local people who are far from the barbarians he expected; they are complex, political, sophisticated, urbane and multilingual; a community of traders and priests with deep cultural and spiritual ways and little need for his Buddhist dharma. What does a Buddhist priest have to offer a complex, sophisticated culture steeped in political and commercial intrigue? Shipwrecked and alone among people of an ancient tradition with deep understanding of spiritual and pragmatic ways, who speak numerous languages and are preeminent traders maintaining deep and powerful social and spiritual customs, a young priest is forced to come to grips with the deeper teachings of his own path. This historical novel follows him as his assumptions of superiority fall away and he explores both the deeper aspects of Buddhism and the complex indigenous spiritual and cultural traditions he finds himself immersed in. The Chinook people were among the most sophisticated and successful trading communities of the nations of not only the Pacific Northwest, but of the entire Continent. Their business and political machinations rivaled those of any empire or culture in history. Murder, love, intrigue and endless plots drive our protagonist's journey of personal and cultural discovery as he comes to grips with both his own and his new family's challenges, strengths and weaknesses.

We follow his fictional narrator through a city transformed-the streets and alleyways deserted, the houses of death with crosses daubed on their doors, the dead-carts on their way to the pits-and encounter the horrified citizens of the city, as fear, isolation, and hysteria take hold. The shocking immediacy of Defoe's description of plague-racked London makes this one of the most convincing accounts of the Great Plague ever written.

The literary journal is an extension of A Novel Group of Writers, Central Oregon Community College’s creative writing club.Welcome to the inaugural issue of The Raconteurs’ Muse, the literary journal of Central Oregon Community College. The literary journal is an extension of A Novel Group of Writers, Central Oregon Community College’s creative writing club. The genesis of the literary journal is a conversation I had last spring with my academic advisor over the dearth of English and Writing classes offered by the college. Specifically, there is no creative writing program at the college. She explained to me, “Creative writing classes are a luxury at COCC.” Furthermore, “If I desired a wider selection of liberal arts classes I should consider transferring schools.”Soon after our tête-à-tête I formed the writing club at COCC. Several months later, during a summer barbecue in my backyard a group of us started The Raconteurs’ Muse Literary Journal. The journal took six months of toil to obtain funding approval from the ASCOCC, and publication authorization from the college administration.June 18, 2013 the writing club will publish Raconteurs’ Muse Volume II, titled Chapters and Verses. Volume II is a collection of manuscript first chapters, as well as short stories and musings created by members of the writing club and students at COCC and Oregon State University Cascade Branch.Sometime toward the later part of July The Raconteurs’ Muse and A Novel Group of Writers will request submissions of short stories, novellas, and novel length manuscripts for a Summer/Fall writing competition. The contest serves as a platform for several publishing projects the club is undertaking, and will announce details in the subsequent weeks. Please like and follow A Novel Group of Writers and The Raconteurs’ Muse via our social network venues for upcoming information and submission instructions.

The Journal Keeper
Phyllis Theroux
This personal memoir "reminds us that there is no such thing as an ordinary moment, and certainly no such thing as an ordinary life." —Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love The Journal Keeper is an openhearted, unflinchingly honest memoir of six years in Phyllis Theroux's life as she ages into her sixties. Reflecting deeply on both her practice as a writer and her personal experiences, she culls from the journals she carefully keeps to create a compelling narrative describing the void left by the passing of her remarkable mother—as well as the joyful surprise of a new love. A natural storyteller, she touches on subjects that occupy us all: loss, loneliness, growing old, financial worries, spiritual growth, and caring for an aging parent. "[Theroux] excels at closely observed and elegantly expressed portraits of domestic life . . . a lovely writer . . . The best thing about The Journal Keeper is the way it...

The Journal I Did Not Keep
Lore Segal
"Segal is a monumental writer, one of the finest of her generation; this lovely collection is a fine introduction to her work."—Kirkus Reviews A DEFINITIVE LOOK AT ONE OF AMERICA'S FINEST WRITERS—INCLUDING NEW AND NEVER-BEFORE-COLLECTED WORK From the award-winning New Yorker writer comes this essential volume spanning almost six decades. Admired for "a voice unlike any other" (Cynthia Ozick) and a style both "wry and poignant" (The New Yorker), Lore Segal is a master literary stylist. This volume collects some of her finest work—including new and uncollected writing—and selections from her novels, stories, and essays. From her very first story—which appeared in The New Yorker in 1961—to today, Segal's voice has been unique in contemporary American literature: Hilarious and urbane, heartbreaking and profound. A keen and utterly unsentimental observer, Segal has often used her own...

Berlin Diary: The Journal of a Foreign Correspondent 1934-1941
William L. Shirer
History / Nonfiction / Memoirs
A radio broadcaster and journalist for Edward R. Murrow at CBS, William Shirer was new to the world of broadcast journalism when he began keeping a diary while in Europe during the 1930s. It was in 1940, still a virtual unknown, that Shirer wondered whether his reminiscences of the collapse of the world around Nazi Germany could be of any interest or value as a book.
Shirer’s Berlin Diary, which is considered the first full record of what was happening in Germany during the rise of the Third Reich, first appeared in 1941. The book was an instant success. But how did Shirer get such a valuable firsthand account? He had anonymous sources willing to speak with him, provided their identity remained protected and disguised so as to avoid retaliation from the Gestapo. Shirer recorded his and others’ eyewitness views to the horror that Hitler was inflicting on his people in his effort to conquer Europe. Shirer continued his job as a foreign correspondent and radio reporter for CBS until Nazi press censors made it virtually impossible for him to do his job with any real accuracy. He left Europe, taking with him the invaluable, unforgettable (and horrific) contents of his Berlin Diary.
Berlin Diary brings the reader as close as any reporter has ever been to Hitler and the rise of the Third Reich. Shirer’s honest, lucid and passionate reporting of the brutality with which Hitler came to power and the immediate reactions of those who witnessed these events is for all time.

War at the Wall Street Journal
Sarah Ellison
This is a tale about big business, an imploding dynasty, a mogul at war, and a deal that sums up an era of change. The main character, rocked by feuding factions and those who would remake it, is the Wall Street Journal, which affects the thoughts, votes, and stocks of two million readers daily. Sarah Ellison, while at the Journal, won praise for covering the $5 billion acquisition that transformed the pride of Dow Jones and the estimable but eccentric Bancroft family into the jewel of Rupert Murdoch's kingdom. Here she expands her work, using her knowledge of the paper and its people to go deep inside the landmark transaction, as no outsider has or can, and also far beyond it, into the rocky transition when Murdoch's crew tussled with old Journal hands and geared up for battle with the New York Times. With access to all the players, Ellison moves from newsrooms (where editors duel) to estates (where the Bancrofts go at it like the Ewings). She shows...

The Journal of a Disappointed Man
W. N. P. Barbellion
The young naturalist W. N. P. Barbellion described this remarkably candid record of living with multiple sclerosis as 'a study in the nude'. It begins as an ambitious teenager's notes on the natural world, and then, following his diagnosis at the age of twenty-six, transforms into a deeply moving account of battling the disease. His prose is full of humour and fierce intelligence, and combines a passion for life with clear-sighted reflections on the nature of death. Barbellion selected and edited this manuscript himself in 1917, adding a fictional editor's note announcing his own demise. This Penguin Classics edition includes 'The Last Diary', which covers the period between submission of the manuscript and Barbellion's actual death in 1919.
