Chapter One
Bailey
Leaning back in my chair, I tapped my feet on the linoleum. Anxiety knocked my knees together, and I gulped down my furiously beating heart. My apartment was as stark as the day I’d moved in, and my gaze trailed unwittingly to my landlord leaning against the empty countertops.
“Thanks for doing this for me, Trevor. I appreciate it.” Eyes clouded with grief met mine, but Trevor only nodded before rolling his shoulders and head sharply. The grays kissing his temple darkened with his expression, and discomfort glued my lips shut. Guilt clawed at the back of my throat, but what could I say, now?
Hey, sorry that I asked you to help guard me against an illegal tenant that beat me up. No . . . I’d already apologized enough when I asked. Reaching to touch my cheek with trembling fingertips, I bit my bottom lip hard. He didn’t know the thoughts plaguing my mind, and I doubt he ever would. Regardless, I’d be forever indebted to him.
“Bailey . . .” Trevor’s harsh sigh cut through the dense atmosphere of my bare kitchen. Or, what used to be my kitchen. Glancing over as goosebumps blanketed my arms and across my chest, I blinked back the sting in my eyes to see him clearly. “You spent the past three months on tiptoes with this guy. Trust me, okay, I’m very well acquainted with what happens when you try to leave and don’t have support. You already paid for the mistake of letting him live here in breach of your lease, literally and figuratively. I’m not upset with you.”
“Ryan should be back soon.” Turning my gaze to my phone, I tightened my grip on my phone. The only thing left in my apartment was me and the chair I sat on. I could’ve simply left and had Trevor change the locks, but I wanted to confront Ryan myself, in person. My heart raged against my ribs until they ached, and a cold sweat stuck my shirt to my back.
But I
Ryan would just move on to the next poor girl, but for myself . . . I had to tell him to his face how awful a person he was. He wouldn’t change, but I’d feel better by the end of this. And I’m supposed to be what matters most to me. I can’t worry about his next victim. As heartless as it sounds, it’s something I can’t worry about. I refuse to worry about it, if I’m being honest . . . but no one was sitting around worrying what he did to me. Especially after he beat me black and blue yesterday. God, how fucking stupid I’d been. And all in the name of love.
“I really loved living here.” Standing up to get some of the intense tension out of my legs, I walked around the kitchen stiffly. This apartment was small but cozy, and sadness gripped my heart in a vice. “I feel so stupid letting Ryan ruin this.”
“You’re not stupid unless you do it again, Bailey. Once is a mistake. Twice is stupidity.” Again, my fingertips prodded my busted-up cheek, and a faint throbbing shot down my jaw. “How’s your face?”
“It’s fine, I guess. I’ll have to deal with. . .” Trailing off, I shrugged lightly as I sucked in a sharp, shallow breath through my nose. “If there’s going to be anything good that comes out of getting beat up in my own bathroom, it’s that I have a better smile.”
Before Trevor could reply to my sour tone, the front door of my apartment rattled lightly. Apprehension shot down my spine and prickled up over my scalp. Gripping my phone in clammy palms, I held my breath as the door creaked slightly. The jingle of keys was overly loud and echoed in my empty kitchen.
Ryan rounded the short corner hiding the kitchen from the door with his head ducked into his phone. For the moment, he didn’t notice me or anything around him, and I scanned him slowly. He was handsome, successful, had nice style and hair—everything he needed to prey on me, or any woman for that matter.
“Bailey! Someone stole my car from the emp—” When he tried to toss his briefcase on the table as he usually did, Ryan paused when it hit the floor with a damning thump. His bright, brown eyes flew up to meet mine, and alarm flashed brilliantly. Slowly, he realized that there was no table, no toaster, nothing.
Because I’d had a team come and take everything. It was all mine, anyway. Ryan wanted me to spend my money on him, promising to pay me back, when he had no intention of ever doing so. For fuck’s sake, by now he’d owed me, what, five thousand? Yeah, I’d never see a dime.
“Where’s the table?” Confusion lilted Ryan’s tone, and he looked around only to catch sight of Trevor. He stiffened noticeably under his plain, casual suit, his eyes swerving between mine and Trevor’s to narrow calculatingly. “Did you decide to replace everything or something?”
Suddenly, I was really glad I had Trevor here as I closed the distance between Ryan and I. Rearing my arm back, I held Ryan’s gaze as I slapped him as hard as I possibly could in his face. He stumbled back, not bothering to dodge my palm even when he realized I was going to hit him. After all, he hit me. An eye for an eye, right?
Clutching his cheek with real shock flickering across his face, Ryan straightened as the clap of skin on skin echoed off the empty cupboards. His face tinged an angry, dark red, but he caught Trevor crossing his arms out of the corner of his eye. Before he could say anything, I forced my lips apart and ignored the painful ache in my chest.
“You made a fool out of me. You lied to me about being screwed out of your apartment and took advantage of me when I let you stay here for a few days. You told me you had no intention of staying for more than a few days, but that turned into almost four months. And when I tried to tell you to look for a new place, you beat me up in the bathroom. You left me bloodied on the bathroom floor and threatened to break both my hands so I couldn’t work. You tried to charm me into not reporting it, but I did, Ryan, I fucking reported it to the police and I can’t wait until your disgusting, despicable ass gets dragged to jail.” By the grace of God, my voice didn’t shake, and Ryan’s face began to get redder. His eyes blazed with fury, and a faint tickle of sick satisfaction threaded through my veins. Taking a deep breath, I steadied myself for my next set of declarations. My notes that I’d made on my phone flashed behind my lids when I blinked. “I sold everything in my apartment, and I broke my lease. I dropped all of your clothes at your work and made sure to let your boss know why I was doing what I was doing. I called your parents and told them you might need a place to stay because you beat me, and I sent them screenshots and audio recordings of your abuse.” The bathroom incident sadly wasn’t the first time, but as always I’d thought he’d stop. What a stupid, naïve girl I’d been. I refused to be that girl any longer. Today was the day I’d take my life back.
Pausing to take a breath and ease some of the pressure squeezing my heart, I clenched and released my jaw. Ryan was shaking with rage now. His chest heaved furiously, and I could almost see the smoke billowing from his ears.
“Since the car you drove was mine, I sold it. I had a tow come get it from your work parking lot after lunch and signed it over to its new owner. Since you didn’t want to pay your back taxes and forced me to take the car in my name, there’s nothing you can do about it. I asked a lawyer. Also, I wiped all the hard drives where you had backed up all your portfolio projects and destroyed them.” Ryan choked on his rage, and his growl prickled my skin and rose the hairs on the back of my neck. He just stood there, trembling, his eyes almost boggling and every vein in his forehead and neck throbbing wildly. I wish I’d had more time to get this all done, to make it worse, but if I’m being honest . . . if it weren’t for Trevor, I wouldn’t have ever been able to pull this off. “I also sent screenshots of my injuries to the girl you’ve been fucking behind my back and let her know what’s in store for her. She was shocked you had a girlfriend and thanked me for the heads up.”
“You’re going to regret this, Bailey.” Hissing at me like a snake, Ryan clenched his hands into tight fists but stayed still. My heart threatened to break out of my ribs, and my stomach churned dangerously at his idle threat. Who did he think he was messing with? I’ve never been the type of woman to back down and my first mistake was retreating the first time he put hands on me.
“No. I’m not. Now, you, me, and Trevor are going to walk out of here, and you’re going to give him your key, and then . . . I’m getting on with my life without you in it.” I’d hidden my car two blocks away under a tarp, but I still didn’t mention that I was packed and ready to go. Forcing his shoulders to uncurl from his ears, Ryan exhaled fire before fumbling with his keychain. He flicked the key onto the floor in front of me, grabbed his briefcase off the floor, and stormed out.
