“If you are wondering if it would involve your power to phase, then that is partially correct, but that would only be the back-up plan. Ideally, Aden would gain the ability to create negative space within himself and could absorb whatever bond he was going to go tandem with into that space.”
Wraith nodded at ANOP’s explanation, but Sophia said, “I know that this might sound selfish, since we’re talking about the end of the world, but I thought in order for Aden to quickly appropriate my power we’d have to … uh… you know. And while I admit that I get the appeal, I already care about someone else.”
I shook my head. “No, Sophia, you have my promise that we will not have sex—that ship has sailed. Once I knew about your relationship with Dr. Henderson, I decided that the only way I would appropriate your power, was if we could do so without physical intimacy.”
Sophia immediately looked relieved, but I could almost see her turning my words over in her mind, and then she frowned.
Before she could say something silly, like asking why she wasn’t good enough, I didn’t stop there. “I understand what it is like to be pushed into making decisions for the greater good. But what value is saving the world, if we have to sacrifice the freedoms we are fighting for? You should get to love whoever you love.”
She took a deep breath and her shoulders briefly shook as she breathed, “Thank you, Aden.”
“That said,” I continued, “my psychic abilities progressed during the battle inside Aqueous’ mind. I am anxious to see if I can appropriate a power more easily.”
“What?! I’m first,” CB said.
Priska and Kenna both said, in stereo, “No. Valkyrie’s first.”
“She has been waiting longer,” Inferna confirmed.
CB threw her arms up and started mumbling under her breath. I’m sure I could have heard what she was saying, but I decided I didn’t want to.
ANOP continued, “It is probable that CB, Valkyrie, and Sophia are the optimal choices, based upon a number of factors—including Aden’s emotional attachment and the benefits to be gained.”
I knew what the AI was saying. She was suggesting, without saying it outright, that Valkyrie’s power might not be the greatest. Perhaps appropriating the power of a speedster, if we could find an unattached one, would be for the best. But I didn’t care. I was already giving away enough of myself for the greater good.
I was going to have the women in my life that I wanted, and I wanted Petra to be one of them. Ever since she’d stood up to me at the board meeting, I had been enamored with her. We had great chemistry—I knew that from our date. And I enjoyed spending time working on various machines with a fellow gear head.
ANOP continued, “I can prepare a list of suitable red and yellow Rays, if you want, to round out your other appropriations. Or, if you prefer, Dr. Feinston could make some recommendations.”
The administrator held up his hands in front of him and waved them side-to-side to show that he wanted no part of that decision.
It was fine, though, because I had an idea. “No, I think we’ll wait on the final two appropriations. I have an idea, but I’m not sure if it will work, and I don’t want to get anyone’s hope up. After Valkyrie and CB are pseudo-bonded, we can discuss what happens next. Now, what about these other upgrade options?”
Just as I asked that, an alarm went off.
Marcus rushed into the room again. “Boss, we’ve got incoming.”
Seconds later, the building shook. We were no longer in the labs below ground, but still… to shake a building like this, that must have been quite an impact.
I looked around but smiled. My team was already in motion. Whoever had decided to knock on our door was about to have a very bad day.

* [Stat Ranking] These stats are based upon a comparative system. Each grade represents a range, rather than a hard and fast objective quantification:
F rank means normal human standards and can range between disabled human to peak human.
D rank means the lowest stage of super and is the most common super rank. In physical stats, this will likely be 3 to 5 times superior to a normal human. This is about 70% of all supers.
C rank is the next most common super rank and typically represents physical abilities between 10 to 25 times normal human capabilities. This is about 18% of supers.
B rank is well above average for supers and typically represents physical abilities from 50 to 100 times normal human capabilities. This is about 10% of supers.
