The Bookman's Tale: A Novel of Obsession
Charlie Lovett
A mysterious portrait ignites an antiquarian bookseller’s search through time and the works of Shakespeare for his lost loveGuaranteed to capture the hearts of everyone who truly loves books, The Bookman’s Tale is a former bookseller’s sparkling novel and a delightful exploration of one of literature’s most tantalizing mysteries with echoes of Shadow of the Wind and A.S. Byatt's Possession.Hay-on-Wye, 1995. Peter Byerly isn’t sure what drew him into this particular bookshop. Nine months earlier, the death of his beloved wife, Amanda, had left him shattered. The young antiquarian bookseller relocated from North Carolina to the English countryside, hoping to rediscover the joy he once took in collecting and restoring rare books. But upon opening an eighteenth-century study of Shakespeare forgeries, Peter is shocked when a portrait of Amanda tumbles out of its pages. Of course, it isn’t really her. The watercolor is clearly Victorian. Yet the resemblance is uncanny, and Peter becomes obsessed with learning the picture’s origins. As he follows the trail back first to the Victorian era and then to Shakespeare’s time, Peter communes with Amanda’s spirit, learns the truth about his own past, and discovers a book that might definitively prove Shakespeare was, indeed, the author of all his plays.Review“With THE BOOKMAN’S TALE, Charlie Lovett tells us a terrific story—there’s mystery and suspense, murder and seduction—but more important, he shows us how it’s all connected, all of this: the reading and the keeping and the sharing of books. It forms a chain long and strange enough to tie a heartbroken young scholar from North Carolina back to the Bard himself, who might or might not have been William Shakespeare. Every link along the way is a bookman’s tale all its own, and Lovett tells them all, except the very last, of course: because that’s you, about to read this book right now.”—ROBIN SLOAN, New York Times bestselling author of Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore“Lovett’s novel, THE BOOKMAN’S TALE, is a marvelous new Shakespearean mystery: an intelligent thriller that is also a love song for books and the people who relish them. Lovett knows his stuff about Shakespeare, rare books, and the passions that both inspire, and he weaves from these a delicious tale of love, loss, and the thrill of discovery. It kept me turning pages till the wee hours for days. The only disappointment was that it came to an end.”—JENNIFER LEE CARRELL, author of Interred with Their Bones“. . .A gripping literary mystery that is compulsively readable until the thrilling end. For fans of Geraldine Brooks’s People of the Book, Shakespeare aficionados, and bibliophiles.”—Library Journal (Starred)“A pleasurably escapist trans-Atlantic mystery is intricately layered with plots, murders, feuds, romances, forgeries—and antiquarian book dealing.”—Kirkus“Fans of mysteries, of love stories, and of rare books will all find moments in Lovett’s novel to treasure.”—Booklist“I don't read much fiction. I'm picky. But I loved racing through Charlie Lovett's The Bookman's Tale, a richly rewarding thriller filled with real-world details about the discovery of a rare book that may or may not be a priceless Shakespearean artifact. Fun for everyone who's ever fondled a soft leather binding!”—DANIEL SINGER, founder, Reduced Shakespeare Company and co-author of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)About the AuthorCharlie Lovett is a writer, teacher, and playwright, whose plays for children have been seen in more than 3,000 productions. Make this one of your top romance novels of the year! The eight—year marriage of the once mutually-adoring couple, Lord and Lady Lovett, is rejuvenated through the anonymous counsel of Lord Lovett’s former mistress.Eight years of marriage has not dimmed Cressida, Lady Lovett’s, love for her husband, but the birth of five children has cooled her ardour. Now rumours are circulating that the kind, dashing and seemingly ever—patient Justin, Lord Lovett, has returned to the arms of his former mistress and Cressida believes her choices are stark—welcome her husband back to the marital bed and risk a sixth pregnancy she fears will kill her, or lose him forever. With the astonishing discovery that methods exist to enable the innocent Cressida to transform herself into the vixen of her husband’s dreams without expanding her nursery, she seeks to repay the woman responsible for her empowerment...only to discover her unlikely benefactress was, and perhaps still is, her husband’s mistress.Book ReviewsThis is a wonderful novella about a couple whose passion for each other hasn't dimmed...A very spicy, yet very sweet, true love story.Reviewed by MelissaAbout the Author:Beverley Oakley (aka Beverley Eikli) wrote her first romance novel when she was seventeen. However, drowning the heroine on the last page (p550!) was, she discovered, not in the spirit of the genre so her romance-writing career ground to a halt and she became a journalist.Throwing in her secure job on a metropolitan daily four years later, she travelled to Botswana to manage a luxury safari lodge in the Okavango Delta. There she met a handsome Norwegian bush pilot.Beverley resumed her romance writing career in a thatched cottage in the middle of a mopane forest with the aforementioned handsome Norwegian bush pilot (who is still just as handsome) and once again called Africa home.ReviewJoyfully Reviewed -Review by Vanessa*Cressida, Lady Lovett, still desires her husband, Justin, Lord Lovett, very much. However, she is frightened of the consequences that a night of pleasure may bring. She doesn't know how to speak of it with her patient husband, but she continues to find excuses for not fulfilling her wifely duties. Only now she has heard the rumors that Lord Lovett has returned to the arms of his former mistress. What's a naïve wife to do?Lady Lovett's Little Dilemma was a charmingly tame short story. The dilemma that Cressida was dealing with was thoroughly explained, but it helped to realize that her knowledge was completely different from today's standards. Justin was an excellent hero, but he could only take so much of what Cressida was dishing out to him. It was the norm for his peers to stray back then, after all. I'm not sure that Lady Lovett's Little Dilemma was completely, historically accurate, but is sure was a sweet story!Lady Lovett's Little Dilemma even showed that someone who has become bitter over their lot in life can continue to be nasty and not change. It was also quite lovely that so many enjoyed a HEA in Lady Lovett's Little Dilemma without sacrificing too much for their bit of happiness. I wouldn't have minded if Beverley Oakley had wanted to push the limits a bit more in Lady Lovett's Little Dilemma*, but I did find this a sweet refreshing story.

Charlie Lovett

Byatt's Possession. Hay-on-Wye, 1995. As he follows the trail back first to the Victorian era and then to Shakespeare’s time, Peter communes with Amanda’s spirit, learns the truth about his own past, and discovers a book that might definitively prove Shakespeare was, indeed, the author of all his plays.
