The Battle for Hong Kong 1941-1945
Oliver Lindsay
In this remarkable study of the Far Eastern War, Oliver Lindsay and John R Harris have provided the most thorough and searching enquiry into the debacle which led to over 12,000 British, Canadian, Indian and Chinese defenders surrendering Hong Kong on Christmas Day 1941. The authors have made use of a mass of unpublished material - part of it drawn from the original war diaries which have never before been in the public domain. Although it is over 60 years since Hong Kong was liberated from the Japanese, numerous important questions regarding the war in the East and occupation of the Colony from 1941 to 1945 have not been explored until now. To what extent, for example, were Churchill and the successive Chiefs of the Imperial General Staff responsible for abandoning this outpost, which could not be reinforced when attacked or defended adequately? Is it true that fine leadership prolonged the fighting, inflicting serious casualties on the highly experienced Japanese when they struck in 1941? How useful was Britain's spying organization in China, which led to catastrophic repercussions for the POWs and Internees? What form did the Japanese atrocities take upon the helpless captives? This detailed and authoritative account of the campaign will provide a particularly compelling read for those interested in the Second World War or the history of the Far East.

King Kong
Edgar Wallace
Mystery & Thrillers
The original novelization of King Kong, featuring a new introduction by Jack Thorne, the Tony-winning playwright of King Kong: Alive on Broadway, and cover art by the celebrated Olly Moss The giant primeval gorilla King Kong is one of the most recognized images in our culture. So great is the mighty Kong's hold on the popular imagination that his story has inspired an entire cinematic universe. Now the legendary monster comes to the stage in the brand-new musical King Kong: Alive on Broadway. Beneath King Kong's cultural significance, however, is a tense and surprisingly tender story. One cannot help but be frightened by Kong's uncontrollable fury, be saddened over the giant's capture, mistreatment, and exploitation by venal showmen, or sympathize with the beast's ill-fated affection for the down-on-her-luck starlet Ann Darrow. With a foreword by Mark Cotta Vaz, the preeminent biographer of Merian C. Cooper, producer of...

Captain Elliot and the Founding of Hong Kong
Captain Elliot
On 26 January 1841 the British took possession of the island of Hong Kong. The Convention of Chuanbi was immediately repudiated by both the British and Chinese governments and their respective negotiators recalled. For the British this was Captain Charles Elliot, whose actions in China became mired in controversy for years to come. Who was Captain Elliot, and how did he find himself at the center of this debate? This book traces Elliot's career from his early life through his years in the Royal Navy before focusing on his role in the First Anglo-Chinese War and the founding of what became the Crown Colony of Hong Kong. Elliot has been demonized by China and for the most part poorly regarded by historians. This book shows him to have been a man ahead of his time whose views on slavery, armed conflict, the role of women and racial equality often placed him at variance with contemporary attitudes. Twenty years after the return of Hong Kong to China, his legacy is still with us.
About the Author: Jon Bursey was educated in the UK and Hong Kong. After reading Classics at Durham he followed a career in university administration, becoming Academic Registrar at the London School of Economics and Registrar and Secretary to Council at the University of Bath. He is retired and lives in Wiltshire.

King Kong
Edgar Wallace
Mystery & Thrillers
The year 1933 saw the appearance of what is still the most famous of all monster movies, King Kong. The giant gorilla of the title is undoubtedly a triumph of special effects, and the fact that it can startle even the most sophisticated audiences today affirms the very special qualities of the RKO Radio production. Even the lavish Paramount re-make of the story in 1976, aided by all manner of superior technology, is nothing like its equal. As film historian Carlos Clarens has written in hisHistory Of The Horror Film(1967), ‘It took exactly a year to complete the original King Kong at a cost of $650,000, an impressive sum for those days, and most of the money went into the special effects – to this day unsurpassed. . . The picture was an utterly preposterous, utterly enthralling piece of showmanship’The basis of the story of the giant gorilla, ‘the eighth wonder of the world’, captured in the jungle and brought to New York where it plunges the city into terror and destruction, was conceived by the American documentary film-maker Merian C Cooper while on location in Africa. This outline was then turned into a screen story by Edgar Wallace (1875–1932), the famous English thriller writer then working in Hollywood under contract to RKO. The stop-motion animation, a brilliant technique devised by Willis H O’Brien, brought the monster amazingly alive on the screen. Despite impressive performances by Robert Armstrong, and Fay Wray as the blonde heroine who attracts Kong s affections, it was the colossal ape who stole all the honours in the film. He has since proved to be just the first in a long line of such monsters who have outshone their human co-stars!Though Merian Cooper’s knowledge of gorilla behaviour contributed a large part to its overall success, it was Edgar Wallace who provided the film with its most dramatic moments and helped produce a milestone in cinema history as important as the “Beauty And The Beast” story in literature. Tragically, though, this prolific writer and larger-than-life character was to die of pneumonia before the picture was completed, and was therefore deprived of the chance – which he would certainly have taken – of novelising the film. As it was, the tale was turned into a novella by one of Wallace’s friends, Draycot M Dell (1880–1936), already a successful adapter of films. Like Wallace, Draycot Dell was a former reporter who had worked on the Daily Mail, later becoming a full-time writer of adventure and thriller books. It was while on the staff of the Mail that Dell met Wallace and, as both men shared a passion for horse racing, they formed a friendship which lasted until Wallace’s death in Hollywood. When King Kong opened in London, it seemed somehow only appropriate that Dell should adapt his late friend’s work and this he did for Cinema Weekly of 28 October 1933. Its inclusion in this anthology marks the first republication of the story in over fifly years, and its very first appearance in book form.

She explodes common attitudes about sex and gender, and shows how modern beauty myths are ripe for rebelling against. Using her own experiences of rape, prostitution, and working in the porn industry as a jumping-off point, she creates a new space for all those who can't or won't obey the rules.Virginie Despentes is the writer and co-director of Baise-Moi, the controversial rape-revenge novel that became the basis for a film by the same name. Born in Paris, she now lives in Barcelona. From Publishers WeeklyIn the newest from Despentes, author of the controversial 1991 novel Baise-Moi (and co-director of the controversial movie adaptation), the feminist provocateur examines key questions of sexuality, male and female roles, and her own awakening to action. Having been raped at 17, and served as unwilling confidante to many women since Baise-Moi's publication, Despentes struggles mightily with a society that taught her, as a woman, not to fight back against a man attempting to rape her "when that same society has taught me that this is a crime from which I will never recover." She also, thankfully, finds some measure of relief; three years after being attacked, she discovered feminist writer Camille Paglia, whose words first inflamed and then emancipated her. Elsewhere in this short book, Despentes discusses sex, pornography, and prostitution. That she spent several years as a prostitute isn't notable, Despentes says; what's notable is that she's willing to speak about it. While Despentes wades boldly into some murky waters ("who is the victim in porn?"), she ultimately settles on a single, low note: "femininity is the same as boot-licking-the act of servility." Coming nearly 20 years after Baise-Moi, Despentes's manifesto feels flat and a bit in thrall to her earlier work. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc.
