The Yellow Admiral
Patrick O'Brian
Historical Fiction / Fiction
Life ashore may once again be the undoing of Jack Aubrey in The Yellow Admiral, Patrick O'Brian's best-selling novel and eighteenth volume in the Aubrey/Maturin series. Aubrey, now a considerable though impoverished landowner, has dimmed his prospects at the Admiralty by his erratic voting as a Member of Parliament; he is feuding with his neighbor, a man with strong Navy connections who wants to enclose the common land between their estates; he is on even worse terms with his wife, Sophie, whose mother has ferreted out a most damaging trove of old personal letters. Even Jack's exploits at sea turn sour: in the storm waters off Brest he captures a French privateer laden with gold and ivory, but this at the expense of missing a signal and deserting his post. Worst of all, in the spring of 1814, peace breaks out, and this feeds into Jack's private fears for his career.
Fortunately, Jack is not left to his own devices. Stephen Maturin returns from a mission in France with the news that the Chileans, to secure their independence, require a navy, and the service of English officers. Jack is savoring this apparent reprieve for his career, as well as Sophie's forgiveness, when he receives an urgent dispatch ordering him to Gibraltar: Napoleon has escaped from Elba.

Fiction / Children's / Young Adult
The fates of Harry Possum and a hundred others hang in the balance, it’s come down to Flossy’s next decision. Every scenario has been considered, every contingency planned out to the nth degree, but she knows no battle plan survives the first shot and can’t escape the queasy feeling she’s overlooked something obvious, something that could make all the difference. What will the pirates do next? The fates of Harry Possum and the hundred soldier-sailors making up Port Isabel’s fledgling navy hang in the balance, it’s down to Flossy’s next decision. Every scenario has been considered, every contingency planned out to the nth degree, but she knows no battle plan survives the first shot and can’t escape the queasy feeling she’s overlooked something obvious, something that could make all the difference. Months of captivity taught her just how nasty and tricky pirates can be, and that was before they had the perfect reason for revenge. What will they do next?By the end of the next ice age, all that remains of the once great, world-spanning human civilisation are myths and ancient, inexplicable artefacts lying at the feet of melting glaciers. Thanks to the red-hot Heat Tree reefs that keep the ice at bay, the lands above the Gulf of Mexico are some of the few places still warm enough to support life. On the western shores of the Gulf is Port Isabel, a town conceived and built by owls who mysteriously vanished hundreds of years before without even bothering to say goodbye. The animals that live there are industrious, peaceful and vegetarian; except for those that aren't, which is where all the trouble starts.

Worse, Matthew Morrow now had a seagoing navy at his disposal, and had forged an alliance with an enemy the Five Ladies, long ago, said they had destroyed. But maybe one man in all the Galaxy could reach Matthew Morrow and persuade him to stand down. Retired Rear Admiral Jacques-Yves de Grasse had once been Matthew Morrow's commanding officer. For the last fifteen years, Admiral de Grasse had been running a vineyard and winery in the south of France, one of the few private lands that the United Nations had spared from the Re-Wilding. So the Admiralty reached out to Admiral de Grasse—who naturally was resentful at the treatment he and Matthew Morrow had both suffered—and he agreed at least to think about it. But they forgot...

Sailing True North
Admiral James Stavridis, USN (Ret. )
From one of the most distinguished admirals of our time and a former Supreme Allied Commander of NATO, a meditation on leadership and character refracted through the lives of ten of the most illustrious naval commanders in history. In his acclaimed book Sea Power, James Stavridis reckoned with the history and geopolitics of the world's great bodies of water and their impact on the broad story of history. Now, in Sailing True North, he offers a much more intimate, human accounting: the lessons of leadership and character contained in the lives and careers of history's most significant naval commanders. Admiral Stavridis brings a lifetime of reflection to bear on the subjects of his study—on naval history; on the vocation of the admiral with its special tests and challenges; and the sweep of global geopolitics. As a teenage samurai, he witnessed the destruction wrought upon his native land by British warships. As the legendary "Silent Admiral", he was at the forefront of innovations in warfare, pioneering the Japanese use of modern gunnery and wireless communication. He is best known as "the Nelson of the East" for his resounding victory over the Tsar's navy in the Russo-Japanese War, but he also lived a remarkable life: studying at a British maritime college, witnessing the Sino-French War, the Hawaiian Revolution, and the Boxer Uprising. After his retirement, he was appointed to oversee the education of the Emperor, Hirohito. This new biography spans Japan's sudden, violent leap out of its self-imposed isolation and into the 20th century. Like all of the Oracle 'psychic daughters', she expects to venture into the modern world and choose a temporary mate for the rite of procreation. She does not expect to have that mate chosen for her by the Oracle herself, or for him to appear in the island's watery caves as a broad-shouldered soul of war, still reeling from the tragedies of his past. As she pursues her sacred imperative, she realizes that Tristan is much more than the Oracle would have her believe, and that she desires not only the strength of his body, but his heart. To save his life, she will betray her own people. To save his soul, she will kindle his fierce passion and match it with her own.

The French Admiral l-2
Part #2 of "Lewrie" series by Dewey Lambdin
Alan Lewrie is a scandalous young rake whose amorous adventures ashore lead to his being shipped off to the Navy. Lewrie finds that he is a born sailor, although life at sea is a stark contrast to the London social whirl to which he had become accustomed. As his career advances, he finds the life of a naval officer suits him. From Library Journal This second novel in a new sea adventure series continues the story of Alan Lewrie, the reluctant British midshipman. This time, Alan finds himself involved in the battle of Yorktown during the American Revolution. His unhappiness with the Royal Navy also begins to be replaced by a sense of dedication and duty. The story is technically correct and historically accurate, but sea genre fans will be disappointed that so much of the action takes place on land. Though Lewrie observes the battle of the Chesapeake, he is on duty with the defenders of Yorktown and barely sees his ship during half the novel. Still, this is an excellent and exciting adventure in what promises to be the best naval series since C.S. Forester.

'The Admiral' is also the nickname of its landlord, Geoffrey Horatio Fitzsimmons, as well as the name of the landlord's dinghy. None of them are as buoyant as they should be, for the pub is threatened with closure due to falling takings. Tempers are already frayed due to the arrival of a television documentary team when Fitzsimmons is found dead in his tethered boat. The villagers assume a simple case of suicide and fear that their debt-ridden pub will now sink without trace. The journalists seem determined to finish the job by raking up old skeletons, but they weren't banking on the fact that this story has been written by 14 extremely competitive...
