The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Robert Louis Stevenson
Fiction / Poetry / Horror
In September of 1884, Robert Louis Stevenson, then in his mid-thirties, moved with his family to Bournemouth, a resort on the southern coast of England, where in the brief span of 23 months he revised A Child\'s Garden of Verses and wrote the novels Kidnapped and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.An intriguing combination of fantast thriller and moral allegory, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde depicts the gripping struggle of two opposing personalities — one essentially good, the other evil — for the soul of one man. Its tingling suspense and intelligent and sensitive portrayal of man\'s dual nature reveals Stevenson as a writer of great skill and originality, whose power to terrify and move us remains, over a century later, undiminished.

Jet Black and the Escape from Culver City #1
John Stevenson
Fiction / Poetry / Horror
Disillusionment can be a great motivator, and when the only way out is up Jet learns that friends can be found in the most unlikely of places: that a courier service is much more than delivering parcels and that diamonds are everyone's best friends. This is the first book in the Jet Black series.Disillusionment can be a great motivator, and when the only way out is up Jet learns that friends can be found in the most unlikely of places: that a courier service is much more than delivering parcels and that diamonds are everyone's best friends. In the Company Wars Chronicles I have a character called Alan P. Ellis. Alan is portrayed as an arrogant and self-important writer, who is the author of a series of books about Jet Black. The idea was to depict Jet Black as a kind of Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers; the kind of over the top character that gets into fanciful and implausible situations. But as anyone who writes will know our characters sometimes refuse to act the way we intended them to, and it occurred to me long after I had introduced Alan that by making Jet into a far-fetched character gave me the opportunity to use a few what if situations I had at the back of my mind without taking the stories too seriously. Jet may have started as a joke, but it seems Alan has had the last laugh.

Discipline is falling apart; rumour fuels fear, and both crew and visitors are losing faith in decisions that have been made. This book examines particular cases in Europe that are suggestive of reincarnation. The first section provides a brief history of the belief in reincarnation among Europeans. The second section considers eight cases from the first third of the twentieth century that were not independently investigated, but were reported and sometimes published by the persons concerned. The third section covers 32 cases from the second half of the twentieth century that were investigated by the author. Many of these cases involved either children who exhibited unusual behavior attributed to a previous life, or adults who experienced recurrent or vivid dreams attributed to...

The Scottish Novels
Robert Louis Stevenson
Fiction / Poetry / Horror
Introduced by Jenni Calder and Roderick Watson. Kidnapped – Catriona – The Master of Ballantrae – Weir of Hermiston These four great novels take us deep into Robert Louis Stevenson’s imaginative and bitter-sweet relationship with his native country. Kidnapped, and its sequel Catriona, are renowned the world over as supreme stories of adventure and romance. On another level they also explore the subtle divisions of Scottish history and character in the eighteenth century, and (some would say) the present day. The Master of Ballantrae takes a darker and more disturbing turn, with its tale of rival brothers caught in a web of hatred, obsession, love and betrayal which draws them to their end in the frozen wastes of North America. Stevenson’s fascination with the divided nature of the human self (most obviously demonstrated in Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde) appears again in the Weir of Hermiston with its terrible confrontation between a father and his son. With an unsurpassed combination of...

Peter Stevenson
These tales were told by storytellers long ago, from people all over the world who emigrated to Wales. In this book you'll meet the rowdy mermaids of Cardigan Bay, the hidden lands below the sea, an ancient tree with a door into the otherworld, an old woman who makes love potions and mischief, the wise old toad who lives in a bog and knows everything, a clever girl who transforms into a swan, a green man who lives in no one's land, the enchantress who swallows a poet, a herd of fairy cattle who live beneath a lake, a boy who wears a frock to stop a castle being built, and an elephant who may or may not have died in Tregaron. These stories only come alive for a moment when a storïwr tells them. They are about transformation in ourselves and our world, our friendships and hopes, and scary sounds at night. Just ask those Welsh mountains. They have lived longer than we have. They have listened to birdsong and the sound of rivers and sea. They have heard these tales before.

All too often in our lives, we develop a preconceived notion of what the ideal should be in a life partner, a family, a job, or any of the many situations that require decisions on a daily basis. We make those decisions based on a number of factors, often just by watching what our friends and family are doing with their lives. But in life’s grand scheme of things one size doesn't fit all, so we adjust our lives based on our own life experiences.Whispers from Within, for both Ethan and the reader, celebrates life, with its many paths that lie before us. An entirely new world of options for living one’s life can be found once we drop the pretense of believing we always know what we want out of life. With the aid of your spirit guide, you will gain the ability to quiet the noise of daily life, while going deep within yourself to discover your truest motivations. Like Ethan, eventually you will begin to stop fighting the life your soul chose this time around, and begin to live a life of joy that others could only envy. In time, Ethan learns an important lesson, that a life well-lived has its own rewards, and neither Ethan, nor the lives he touches, will ever be the same.

Green Money
D. E. Stevenson
"Now, listen to me," said Mr. Green earnestly. "I've brought up my little girl as a girl should be brought up. I've sheltered her from the world. She's uncontaminated by the modern ideas-uncontaminated. What d'you think of that?"Young George Ferrier's frivolous jaunt in London ends with an unexpected encounter with wealthy Mr. Green, old friend of his father, who spontaneously drafts George to be a trustee for his daughter Elma. George accepts (primarily due to the payment involved) and puts it out of his mind, returning home to his high-spirited Irish mother, distracted astronomer father, and friends Peter Seeley and his sister Cathy. But Mr. Green's sudden death-and the discovery that his fellow trustees are distinctly on the shady side-launches George into a series of rollicking adventures as he attempts to secure the overly-sheltered Elma's wealth, protect her from fortune-hunters, and shield her from her own naïve instincts.First published in 1939 and out of...

Chain of Fools
Richard Stevenson
Attacks on Janet Osborne lend new significance to the earlier murder of her brother Eric. They were holding out to keep the family newspaper a beacon of liberal advocacy journalism. A screwy plot to save the newspaper turns tragic and even screwier before Strachey and a driven reporter step in to sort it all out. From BooklistAlbany's best-known gay private eye, Donald Strachey, and his longtime lover, Timmy Callahan, return in a Lou Grantlike plot. A liberal newspaper is up for sale, and the family that owns it is divided between a liberal media firm's bid and the higher one from a chain that pays more attention to the ads than to editorial content. When Strachey enters, one of the party that wants to take the lower-paying offer is already dead, and two attempts have been made on the life of another. The plot strikes home for Strachey when it comes out that, back in high school, Timmy was another family member's lover. The new series entry features one of Stevenson's most interesting characters yet--dikey Dale, a surgeon who spares no feelings and minces no words during any of her appearances. Dale and her lover, Janet, should open up the Donald Strachey Mystery Fan Club to include many who ordinarily read only lesbian mysteries. Charles HarmonReview"[Richard Stevenson's] mysteries are among the wittiest and politically pointed around today."--The Washington Post"Stevenson manages to bring new urgency to the crazy family scenario...enough to make you pack Uzis and hand grenades to your next family reunion."--Kirkus Reviews

Red White Black and Blue
Part #12 of "Donald Strachey" series by Richard Stevenson
In an election year, Don finds himself in the unlikely role of political operative. Rumors about the Tea Party's opportunistic gubernatorial candidate, Kenyon Louderbush, paint him as an unfaithful, callous exploiter of young men...young men that he puts into the hospital...or perhaps the morgue. Don smells truth in those rumors. But, he's confounded by a shadowy conspiracy, witnesses' fear and a grieving family appallingly willing to give up on justice for a brutalized son and brother. In RED WHITE AND BLACK AND BLUE, series creator Stevenson takes witty aim at the polarization, dissembling and double-dealing of American politics. It's a story that leaves even our hero, Don, tarnished and bruised.

The Black Arrow: A Tale of Two Roses
Robert Louis Stevenson
Fiction / Poetry / Horror
“The Black Arrow” is what every book about the Middle Ages should be and more, with suspense, action, disguises, escapes, and of course, the occasional love scene. Robert Louis Stevenson lived in the mid-1800s, and is renowned for his many works, including Treasure Island, Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Kidnapped. The Black Arrow, written originally for a magazine, was written after Stevenson’s recovery from a serious illness and published right after Treasure Island. Dick Shelton, a boy of sixteen, is quickly thrust into the conflict of the War of the Roses. He battles against almost any kind of evil - bloodthirsty pirates, a murderous priest, and even his own legal guardian - Sir Daniel Brackley. Through the whole book Dick strives to become a knight and rescue his true love. Although most likely the least known of Stevenson’s great adventure novels, “The Black Arrow” is the best in the eyes of many.

Ian Stevenson, M. D.

In addition to these religious beliefs, many people believe it offers an explanation for the mysteries of life. There are children that claim to remember previous lives as adults or even animals. These claimed memories might affect the development of the child and be incorporated into the child's personality. This book presents an in-depth look at Dr. Stevenson's forty years studying children who claim to remember previous lives. It is an informative, professional read that dispels common misconceptions about reincarnation and offers an open-minded perspective. It provides an overview of the history of the belief in and evidence for reincarnation, with new material relating to birthmarks and birth defects, independent replication studies, and recent developments in genetic study. It also covers research on children, the methods...
