The Shack
William P. Young
Theatre / Classics / Poetry
Mackenzie Allen Philips\' youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later in the midst of his Great Sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change Mack\'s world forever. In a world where religion seems to grow increasingly irrelevant The Shack wrestles with the timeless question, "Where is God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain?" The answers Mack gets will astound you and perhaps transform you as much as it did him. You\'ll want everyone you know to read this book!

The Best Minds of My Generation: A Literary History of the Beats
Allen Ginsberg
Poetry
In 1977, twenty years after the publication of his landmark poem 'Howl' and Jack Kerouac's On the Road, Allen Ginsberg decided it was time to teach a course on the literary history of the Beat Generation. In The Best Minds of My Generation - a compilation of lectures from the course, expertly edited by renowned Beats scholar, Bill Morgan - Ginsberg gives us the convoluted origin story of the 'Beat' idea. Amongst anecdotes of meeting Kerouac, Burroughs and other figures for the first time, Ginsberg elucidates the importance of music, and particularly jazz rhythms, to Beat writing, discusses their many influences - literary, pharmaceutical and spiritual - and paints a portrait of a group who were leading a literary revolution. A unique document that works both as historical record and unconventional memoir, The Best Minds of My Generation is a vivid, personal and eye-opening look at one of the most important literary movements of the twentieth century.

Woody Allen Makes A Scary Sandwich - Horror Pastiche, Stories & Poems
Karen S. Cole
Humor and Comedy / Art / Horror
Heywood "Woody" Allen: Over time, Allan Stewart Konigsberg and I have associated with each other. This is the first in a series of books compiling a few short stories we've distantly collaborated on throughout the past 25 years. I am a book ghostwriter and editor of long standing, and these "tall tales" reflect a variety of genres including horror fiction, humorous sci-fi and narrative nonfiction.Woody Allen has forever fascinated me as a friend, a mentor and a colleague. He is a humor writer par excellence whom I spoke with when I was 14, during a radio call-in show about the Holocaust. The next day, he sent me a two page letter, stating that he thought I should pursue a career in show business. I kept and treasured this handwritten, signed missive for years. Later on, he sent me another document, a book length "love letter" of sorts, where he told me about his life and what he thought I should be doing with mine. It contained an imaginary "duel" with Malcolm X - which Woody necessarily won!He was the main crush in my intellectual life, all through my teenage years. His Madison Ave., NYC humor writing career burgeoned, ballooned and grew, and we continued to correspond in writing, keeping tabs on each other. I considered him to be my Manhattan Jewish Rabbi, along with Jerry Lewis, who imitated my special midnight backflip once on camera. Jerry and I have worked extensively with seriously disabled adults and children, such as boys with muscular dystrophy. I worked for a man for several years who has both MD and cerebral palsy, as his certified nurse aide for in-home care. This is the first in a series of books compiling the short stories I've written over the past twelve or more years. Many of them were inspired by the works of Woody Allen, and the last story in this book was ghostwritten with some assistance from him. I am a book ghostwriter and editor of long standing, and these "tall tales" reflect a variety of different genres, including both fiction and nonfiction, which I wrote either for practice or in order to improve my own writing. Original, suspenseful epics; gripping, humorous, including horror, science fiction, narrative nonfiction, and a host of other topics as perceptively descriptive stories, which should help you perceive the Universe in a whole new intrinsically original and realistic baleful light.

Ralph of the Roundhouse; Or, Bound to Become a Railroad Man
Frank V. Webster
The Daylight Express rolled up to the depot at Stanley Junction, on time, circling past the repair shops, freight yard and roundhouse, a thing of life and beauty. Stanley Junction had become a wide-awake town of some importance since the shops had been moved there, and when a second line took it in as a passing point, the old inhabitants pronounced the future of the Junction fully determined. Engine No. 6, with its headlight shining like a piece of pure crystal, its metal trimmings furbished up bright and natty-looking, seemed to understand that it was the model of the road, and sailed majestically to a repose that had something of dignity and grandeur to it.

Fateful Lightning: A New History of the Civil War & Reconstruction
Allen C. Guelzo
History / Biography
The Civil War is the greatest trauma ever experienced by the American nation, a four-year paroxysm of violence that left in its wake more than 600,000 dead, more than 2 million refugees, and the destruction (in modern dollars) of more than $700 billion in property. The war also sparked some of the most heroic moments in American history and enshrined a galaxy of American heroes. Above all, it permanently ended the practice of slavery and proved, in an age of resurgent monarchies, that a liberal democracy could survive the most frightful of challenges. In Fateful Lightning, two-time Lincoln Prize-winning historian Allen C. Guelzo offers a marvelous portrait of the Civil War and its era, covering not only the major figures and epic battles, but also politics, religion, gender, race, diplomacy, and technology. And unlike other surveys of the Civil War era, it extends the reader's vista to include the postwar Reconstruction period and discusses the modern-day legacy of the Civil War in American literature and popular culture. Guelzo also puts the conflict in a global perspective, underscoring Americans' acute sense of the vulnerability of their republic in a world of monarchies. He examines the strategy, the tactics, and especially the logistics of the Civil War and brings the most recent historical thinking to bear on emancipation, the presidency and the war powers, the blockade and international law, and the role of intellectuals, North and South. Written by a leading authority on our nation's most searing crisis, Fateful Lightning offers a vivid and original account of an event whose echoes continue with Americans to this day.Review"Guelzo's book is a shining example of the virtues of the macro approach when it is undertaken with energy and efficiency. By panning out and reviewing the events that occurred over several decades, Guelzo offers a useful synthesis of the developing Civil War narrative..." - The New York Times "It's hard to imagine a better one-volume history of the American Civil War than Gettysburg College professor Allen C. Guelzo's new work." - The Washington Times "Allen C. Guelzo's new book should occupy the same position in the current Civil War sesquicentennial as Bruce Catton's books did 50 years ago during the war's centennial. Fateful Lightning: A New History of the Civil War & Reconstruction deserves this prominence for Guelzo's thorough knowledge of the subject, his ability to draw fresh conclusion, and his exceptional writing skills." - The Saturday Evening Post "This is an outstanding effort to recount and explain our greatest national trauma to general readers." - Booklist"With his accustomed eloquence and erudition, Allen C. Guelzo has produced a grand and sweeping account of the Civil War, vividly depicting its events, its characters, and, most of all, the ideas that drove them. Fateful Lightning is destined to take its place alongside the classic narratives of the nation's greatest crisis." --Steven E. Woodworth, author of This Great Struggle: America's Civil WarAbout the AuthorAllen C. Guelzo is the Henry R. Luce Professor of the Civil War Era, and Director of Civil War Era Studies at Gettysburg College. He is the author of Abraham Lincoln: Redeemer President and Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation: The End of Slavery in America, both of which won the Lincoln Prize. His most recent books on Lincoln and the Civil War era are Lincoln and Douglas: The Debates That Defined America and Lincoln: A Very Short Introduction.

Most of these titles have been out of print and off the bookstore shelves for decades. The book series is intended to preserve the cultural legacy and to promote the timeless works of classical literature. Readers of a TREDITION CLASSICS book support the mission to save many of the amazing works of world literature from oblivion. With this series, tredition intends to make thousands of international literature classics available in printed format again – worldwide.
